Introduction to Computer Coding
Lesson 1 - Introduction to Coding & Computational Thinking
00 to 05m: Typing Test- Go to MonkeyType.com
06 to 15m: Introduction to Computer Programming, Coding & Algorithms
- A computer is basically a very fast, very obedient robot that doesn't understand context. It only does exactly what you tell it to do.
- A computer program is a series of instructions written in a special language (called a programming language) that tells the computer what to do.
- Coding - is the act of writing a computer program
- An algorithm is just a fancy word for a list of step-by-step instructions to complete a task.
- Activity: The "Robot Guide" Game
15 to 40m: Hands-on Puzzle Solving via Code.org
Objective: Practice logical sequencing and debugging using block programming.
Go to Code.org Classic Maze
Work through the 18 puzzles (or as far as you can get in the next 30 - 40 minutes!)
Restart at Start at step 7 here
40 to 45m: Wrap-Up & Discussion Points
"What was the most frustrating part about trying to get the Angry Bird to the pig? Did the computer ever do something you didn't tell it to do?"
"Think about your morning routine from the moment you wake up to when you sit down for breakfast. What is one 'algorithm' you do every day, and what happens if you accidentally skip a step or do it out of order?"
